Artist & crypto-image-extraordiniare Micah Lidberg rules the school with extreme detailed illustrations of
other worldly phenomena that only most of us dream about. (Especially if you love ET, the 1990s or anything that remotely resembles your childhood fantasies.) This boy’s imagery is perfect.

Surplus Design Studio

Check out designs created by artist Anthony Dimitre. Most of his graphics are just 2 or 3colors, and consist of large shapes. They have a distinctive minimalist approach that is easily readable and creative. I especially like Dimitre’s use of negative space.

IBM’s Smarter Planet Campaign

A series of fresh and clever posters designed by Noma Bar for IBM’s Smarter Planet Campaign. Each poster forces you to look at it just a little bit longer to figure out what’s going on. Bar uses negative space wonderfully to draw the viewer in.

There are few documentaries which really capture something captivating like these three movies are able to convey. I find my self feeling inspired after watching these documentaries, interviews with creative and intelligent people, discussions of philosophical topics, or just the presentation of beautiful design. I suggest you check these design films out online.

Helvetica” is a great documentary which takes you into the world of typography, specifically the typeface Helvetica. This is a feature length indie film which some great interviews from people in the design world. It really goes into great detail on the orgins of Helvetica, and what it meant for design at the time, and what it represents now.

Its great to watch this documentary and hear the different takes on something as simple as a typeface, there are haters and lovers of Helvetica, and I find my self as a lover. This documentary puts great focus on clean aesthetics in design, and the role a clean typeface can play on art and design.

“Objectified” is a unique feature film about objects and their meaning in our society. The documentary goes in depth in the steps and process to developing design in our products, discussing what “good” design is to some of the most creative minds in the world. Some great interviews with great minds from companies like VW, Apple and others who design appealing products.

ART & COPY” is a powerful new film about advertising and inspiration. Directed by Doug Pray (SURFWISE, SCRATCH, HYPE!), it reveals the work and wisdom of some of the most influential advertising creatives of our time — people who’ve profoundly impacted our culture, yet are virtually unknown outside their industry. Exploding forth from advertising’s “creative revolution” of the 1960s, these artists and writers all brought a surprisingly rebellious spirit to their work in a business more often associated with mediocrity or manipulation: George Lois, Mary Wells, Dan Wieden, Lee Clow, Hal Riney and others featured in ART & COPY were responsible for “Just Do It,” “I Love NY,” “Where’s the Beef?,” “Got Milk,” “Think Different,” and brilliant campaigns for everything from cars to presidents. They managed to grab the attention of millions and truly move them. Visually interwoven with their stories, TV satellites are launched, billboards are erected, and the social and cultural impact of their ads are brought to light in this dynamic exploration of art, commerce, and human emotion.
